Pilot safety and SIV training course – David Eyraud

MEMO

Asymmetric collapses (side collapses)

A – If you have 3 lower A-lines (on each side), with or without A’ (ear kit).

If you have only 2 lines: see B and C below.

1 – Unmaintained asymmetric collapse

Hook the brake handle to the risers on the collapse side. Keep the other handle normally in hand.
Grab the two outer front lines (A2 and A3) at the very bottom of the lines, thumb down, in contact with the small maillons.
Pull quickly then release immediately.

Perform several collapses:
  • small ones then larger ones (by pulling faster and lower).
  • letting yourself fall into the harness then trying not to fall into the harness.

2 – Maintained asymmetric collapse

Hook the brake handle to the risers on the collapse side. Keep the other handle normally in hand.

Be ready to counter: outer elbow and forearm in contact with the risers: you’ll need to maintain heading!

Grab the two outer front lines (A2 and A3) at the very bottom of the lines, thumb down, in contact with the small maillons.

Pull quickly down to the bottom of the risers and hook your hand to the risers (just above the carabiner).

Don’t let yourself turn: neither to one side nor the other.

Slide the lines on the edge of your hand.

Fly straight.

Make a turn on the open side and take the requested heading.

Make a turn on the closed side (controlling the rotation speed) and take the requested heading.

To reopen:

release the lines fairly quickly, and retrieve the handle.

B – If you have 2 lower A-lines (on each side), with A’ (ear kit).

1 – Unmaintained asymmetric collapse

Hook the brake handle to the risers on the collapse side. Keep the other handle normally in hand.
Grab the two front risers (A and A’) at the very top, under the small maillons, thumb down.
Pull quickly then release immediately.

Perform several collapses:
  • small ones then larger ones (by pulling faster and lower).
  • letting yourself fall into the harness then trying not to fall into the harness.

Pull quickly down to the bottom of the risers and hook your hand to the risers (just above the carabiner or a little higher for a smaller collapse).
Don’t let yourself turn: neither to one side nor the other.
