Pilot safety and SIV training course – David Eyraud

MEMO

Initiation to spirals

Spiral to the right at less than 45° with natural exit

Entry via the outside roll: left weight shift + left brake (less than 1/4 turn)…

Hands up + weight shift to the right… (wait for the wing to be on the right)…

Brake right and maintain to enter into the spiral, until the glider inclines (feeling of acceleration)…

To exit: hands up + neutral weight (centered into the harness) and do nothing, hold onto the risers and observe what happens: a climb with roll to the left. Then a surge with roll to the right.

Spiral to the right at less than 45° with controlled exit

Entry via the outside roll: left weight shift + left brake (less than 1/4 turn)…

Hands up + weight shift to the right… (wait for the wing to be on the right)…

Brake right and maintain to enter into the spiral, until the glider inclines (feeling of acceleration)…

To exit: hands up + neutral weight (centered into the harness)

“ready for the right hand…”

at the “now”: progressively lower the right brake, “right, right , right…” to dampen the roll to the left. Keep centered into the harness and watch the horizon in front of you.

At the top of the climb: hands up and look 45° above the horizon.

Wait for the wing to arrive vertical to the pilot. Catch! At the end of the surge (at the boundary): hands up!

Spiral to the right at more than 45°

Even if you don’t intend to go that deep, it’s important to be prepared: sometimes you go deeper than you wanted!

Entry via the outside roll: left weight shift + left brake (less than 1/4 turn)…

Hands up + weight shift to the right… (wait for the wing to be on the right)…

Brake right and maintain to enter into the spiral, until the glider inclines (feeling of acceleration)…

To exit:

“counter PAF!”: raise right hand and simultaneously make a brief counter to the left (weight shift + brake)…

hands up + neutral weight (centered into the harness)

“ready for the right hand…”

at the “now”: progressively lower the right brake, “right, right , right…” to dampen the roll to the left. Keep centered into the harness and watch the horizon in front of you.

At the top of the climb: hands up and look 45° above the horizon.

Wait for the wing to arrive vertical to the pilot. Catch! At the end of the surge (at the boundary): hands up!
